City of Aveiro

Aveiro, a charming city on Portugal’s Atlantic coast, is located about 250 km north of Lisbon and 70 km south of Porto. Known as the “Venice of Portugal,” it is famous for its picturesque canals, which are navigated by brightly painted traditional boats called moliceiros. The city is surrounded by stunning beaches and the expansive Ria de Aveiro lagoon, creating a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage.

In the historic quarter, visitors can explore quaint whitewashed fishermen’s houses and experience the lively Mercado do Peixe (Fish Market), where nightly catches are auctioned early in the morning. Aveiro’s canals, salt pans, and nearby beaches like São Jacinto, Praia da Barra, and Costa Nova are must-see attractions. Costa Nova is particularly famous for its colorful striped houses, while Praia da Barra boasts Portugal’s tallest lighthouse, standing at 62 meters.

The city is a hub of culture and leisure, offering activities such as moliceiro boat rides, cycling with BUGA (Aveiro’s free bike service), and walking tours of Art Nouveau architecture and the contemporary designs of Aveiro University. Its flat terrain makes it ideal for exploring on foot.

Aveiro’s gastronomy is a highlight, featuring dishes like eel stew, fish soups, and bacalhau (dried cod), which is deeply tied to the region’s history. Don’t miss the iconic ovos moles, sweet egg yolk treats shaped like fish or barrels. For a deeper dive into the codfish tradition, visit nearby Ílhavo, known as the Portuguese Codfish Capital.

We hope you have a fantastic time in Aveiro
