Description:

The Symposium on Bioengineering happens on April 14th and 15th at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto! This is the 9th edition. “Solving Tomorrow, Today” continues to be the motto adopted. Taking the best from the previous editions and improving it. Symposium has 30 speakers from several different countries to bring you news on the hottest topics current and best of all in bioengineering: nanotechnology and food technology, microbiology and bacterial resistance, leading technologies for diagnosis, prognosis and / or treatment of some of the major causes of death, biomedical engineering at the service of those with physical limitations and Computational Technologies with a focus on Augmented Reality / Virtual, Big Data and Image Analysis. Additionally, there are two transversal panels, Bioengineering in Space and Veterinary Medicine, and even a Bio-Entrepreneurship panel. The event features a “warm-up” with workshops and company visits during Friday. Furthermore, there are the opportunity to meet researchers and entrepreneurs through sessions of “Speed Dating” or Social Dinner, and the opportunity to contribute for a solidary cause -the Pfuka U Famba Nutritional Rehabilitation Center in Mozambique – during registration or during the event.

Aftermath:

The IEEE EMBS chapter Portugal was represented at the event with a workshop of design thinking by Carlos Ferreira, treasurer; a presentation by João Sanches, vice-chair; a presentation by Alexandre Bernardino, Aurélio Campilho and Cecília Calado, members. More than hundred participants were present at the visits to institutes and companies organized on Friday. Over the weekend, a record audience of about 400 students across the country filled the auditorium of the Faculty of Engineering to meet the vanguard of Biological Engineering, Biomedical Engineering and Molecular Biotechnology, presented by 40 speakers and moderators from all over the world, country and all of Europe that they were brought to the beautiful Invicta. It was a fantastic event indeed. Congratulations to NEB-FEUP / ICBAS, the organizers. Each edition confirms that it is the best bioengineering event in Portugal.
